About this place
Catholic Nakamachi Church is a Christian (Catholic) church and its sanctuary in Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture. It is one of the few surviving atomic-bombed buildings in Nagasaki and was restored using the remaining tower and outer walls. In the Meiji period, there was no Catholic church in the urban area of Nagasaki other than Oura Cathedral, and a church for Japanese believers was wanted; it was built on the site of the Omura domain's storehouse residence with a donation from a French woman. It was designed by Father Papinot of the Paris Foreign Missions Society.
