Overview
The oldest temple in the Yaeyama Islands. The Nio figures at its sanmon gate were swept away by a tsunami and are said to have come back from the sea.
About this place
Torinji is a temple of the Rinzai sect, Myoshinji school, in Ishigaki, Okinawa Prefecture. Its mountain name is Nankaisan. The principal image is Kannon Bodhisattva. It is the oldest Buddhist temple in the Yaeyama Islands. This entry also describes the adjacent Gongendo. It was founded in 1614 by King Sho Nei, the 7th king of the Second Sho Dynasty of the Ryukyu Kingdom, on the advice of the Satsuma domain to build shrines and temples in Yaeyama. At that time Gongendo was also founded on the adjacent land.
