About this place
Kin Kannonji is a Koyasan Shingon-sect temple in Kin, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture. Its mountain name is 'Kinpozan'. The principal image is Sho Kannon. In Okinawa Prefecture, where most temple and shrine buildings were lost in the Pacific War, it is a valuable wooden building preserving an old prewar architectural style. According to tradition, it was founded in the 16th century by the priest Nisshu Shonin. In the early 16th century, Nisshu Shonin set out from Kii Province for Tang China (some say he was aiming for the Western Pure Land by Fudaraku crossing), but was shipwrecked and drifted to Funaya (Tomihana Port) in Kin in the Ryukyu Kingdom.
