About this place
Niiyama Shrine is a shrine in Mato, Kanzakicho, Kanzaki, Saga Prefecture. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. According to the shrine's records, it began in 729 (Tenpyo 1) when Matsuo Taisha was transferred here. Later, in 844 (Jowa 11), when Jikaku Daishi was returning from Tang China, he stopped at this place and reported to the court that he had found a plaque of Hiyoshi Shrine in the ground; Emperor Ninmyo, sensing the divine power of Hiei, ordered that a branch deity of Hiyoshi Shrine in Sakamoto, Omi, be enshrined together, and it became a prayer site of the imperial court.
