About this place
Tashima Shrine (Tashima-jinja) is a shrine on Kabeshima island in Yobuko-cho, Karatsu, Saga Prefecture (formerly Yobuko, Matsuura District, Hizen Province). The area corresponds to Matsuro-koku, which appears in the Chinese chronicle Wei Zhi (Account of the Wa) as the first land of the Wa mainland. An important point on the safest sea route to the continent, it enjoyed the favor of the central government from ancient times. In antiquity it was recorded as "Tajima-ni-imasu-kami-no-yashiro." It is the only Myojin Taisha in Hizen Province and was at one time regarded as the Ichinomiya of Hizen Province. Its former shrine rank under the Meiji reforms was Kokuhei Chusha (medium-sized state-supported shrine).
