About this place
Takeo Shrine is a shrine at the foot of Mount Mifune in Takeomachi, Takeo, Saga Prefecture. It is also known for its sacred tree, a great camphor said to be 3,000 years old. According to the 'Takeo Jinja Honki', in 735 (Tenpyo 3) the first chief priest, Tomo no Yukiyori, received an oracle, which was reported to the court through Dazaifu, and the shrine was founded with Takeuchi no Sukune as the main deity and the following four deities enshrined with him. In the Heian period its former shrine rank was a prefectural shrine of 'Dazaifu', the local administrative office of the Kyushu region, and imperial envoys attended its festivals; it served as the guardian shrine of Kishima District.
