About this place

Shinzan Shrine is a shrine in Shinzan, Kitaura, Oga, Akita. In the Edo period, Akagamiyama Kohanji stood here as Temple No. 27 of the Akita Rokugun Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage, but it became Shinzan Shrine through the anti-Buddhist movement of the Meiji era. According to the shrine's tradition, it began in the reign of Emperor Keiko, when Takenouchi no Sukune, on his way down to the Oga Peninsula to inspect the provinces of the Hokuriku region, climbed Wakiideyama (now Oga Shinzan and Oga Honzan), prayed for the success of his mission, the peace of the land and good fortune in battle, and enshrined Ninigi no Mikoto and Takemikazuchi no Mikoto.
