About this place
Imi no Miya Shrine is a shrine in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It stands almost at the centre of Chofu (the castle town area) and is said to be the site of Toyoura no Miya, the temporary palace where Emperor Chuai stayed during his campaign to subdue the Kumaso. It is a shrine listed in the Engishiki, and its former shrine rank was Kokuhei Shosha (national small shrine). It is regarded as the Ninomiya of Nagato Province and is now a Beppyo shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines. It has the nationally designated Natural Monuments Manju-jima and Kanju-jima as detached precincts. Also, as the sumo wrestler Kaiketsu Masaaki, during his active career, prayed for victory in the Kyushu tournament at Arakuma Inari Shrine and won the championship, he visits each year to coincide with the Mikka Sumo on November 3.
