Overview
A town where Xavier was permitted to preach by Ouchi Yoshitaka, and Japan's first permanent church was established. One of the starting points of Japanese Christian history.
About this place
Yamaguchi Xavier Memorial Cathedral is a cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Hiroshima in Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is also called the Xavier Memorial Cathedral, though the official facility name is spelled Saviel without the voiced sound. It was built in 1952 (Showa 27) to mark the 400th anniversary of Francis Xavier's arrival in Japan (his missionary work in Yamaguchi).
