About this place
Umpoji is a temple in Kamiogihara, Enzan, Koshu, Yamanashi. It is a Rinzai sect Myoshinji school temple whose principal image is Juichimen Kannon (Sakeishi Kannon). Its mountain name is Sakeishizan. It stands in the upper reaches of the Omo River, a tributary of the Fuefuki River flowing through the eastern Kofu Basin, along the mountain path that follows the Ome Kaido toward Daibosatsu Pass. According to the temple's tradition, it was originally a Shingon or Tendai temple, and in 745 (Tenpyo 17) Gyoki is said to have opened it by carving the principal image Juichimen Kannon from a bush-clover tree that grew overnight when a large rock split.
