About this place
Kenchu-ji is a Pure Land (Jodo) sect temple in Tsutsui, Higashi Ward, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. Its mountain name is Tokozan. The principal image is Amida Nyorai. Throughout the Edo period, the mausoleums of successive lords of Owari Domain were located here. In Keian 4 (1651), the second lord of Owari Domain, Tokugawa Mitsutomo, built the main hall, which enshrines the memorial tablet of Yoshinao, and other buildings, to pray for the repose of his father, the first lord Tokugawa Yoshinao, and to make it the family temple of successive Owari Tokugawa lords and a spiritual refuge for all the people of Owari Domain, with Seiyo Kakudon Shonin, abbot of Gukyo-ji in Yuki, Shimosa Province, as founding priest.
