Overview
Wooden arcades that Kuroishi's merchant houses extend over the street, a snow-country passage kept since the Edo period.
About this place
Nakamachi Komise-dori is an arcade-like passageway in Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture, that has continued since the early Edo period, and it is said that nowhere else in Japan has such a well-preserved set of them. Its administrative route name is Kuroishi Municipal Road Maemachi Nozoe Line. It is a street where, on top of wooden pillars lined up along the road side called komise, a roof like eaves with a board ceiling shields people from winter snow and summer sun.
