About this place
Utou Shrine is a shrine in Yasukata, Aomori, Aomori Prefecture. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. It enshrines as its main deities the three Munakata goddesses, Ichikishimahime no Mikoto, Tagitsuhime no Mikoto and Tagirihime no Mikoto, known as gods of the sea and of safe voyages. It also enshrines Ukanomitama no Mikoto, Miyabi no Mikoto, Sarutahiko no Mikoto and Watatsumi no Okami. Tradition says that in the reign of Emperor Ingyo, a man called Utou Chunagon Yasukata, who was in disgrace and confined at Sotogahama, was moved by a vision of Takakura Myojin in a dream, built a small shrine on the tidal flat and enshrined the three Munakata deities, which was the origin of the shrine.
