A spring-fed pool at Tashirotai in Aomori. Clear water rises in the pasture and weed sways at the surface.

About this place

A spring-fed pond in Tashirotai, Aomori. It lies a little way down from the Tashirotai grazing hut, and just beyond the pond the water becomes a clear stream about 20 cm wide. In this stream live five species of planarian that regenerate even when cut with a blade, all in the same place, and no other area on Honshu has this. The flow is about 200,000 tons per day and the water temperature is 7 degrees C.
