Overview
A small island at the south end of Tateyama Bay. Uplift in the Great Kanto Earthquake joined it to the land, and you can walk across.
About this place
Okinoshima, an island in the Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park at the southern end of Tateyama Bay in Tateyama. It once lay 500 m offshore, but uplift from the Great Kanto Earthquake and other causes has joined it to the mainland. The uninhabited island has a circumference of about 1 km and is covered with coastal forest of Japanese cinnamon, tabu-no-ki and others; it is also known as the northern limit of coral habitat. Swimming, snorkeling, tide-pool play and shell collecting are possible, and guided exploration tours are also offered.
