Overview
A townscape on Osakishimojima in Kure, a port where ships waited for wind; a preservation district of traditional buildings.
About this place
A townscape in Mitarai, Toyo, Kure. It prospered as a port town for waiting for wind and tide in the Edo period and was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1994 (Heisei 6). Merchant houses, teahouses, boat inns, homes, shrines, and temples are mixed together, with alleys running like a net. Port town structures such as the Ohatoba, stone bridges, a high lantern, stone seawalls, and gangi stairs also remain.
