Overview
A pond created as a by-product of works built to hold back volcanic mudflows. Minerals dissolved in the water scatter the light, and the depth of blue shifts with the season and the weather.
About this place
A pond in Shirogane, Biei. It was created by accident during construction of a check dam meant to guard against volcanic mudflows from Mount Tokachi. Groundwater welling up from Shirahige Falls mixes with the Biei River, and components in the water reflect sunlight so that it looks a vivid blue. Parking: 220 spaces, paid.
