Overview
Japan's largest caldera lake. Dig into the sand at the shore and hot water seeps up; swans gather here in winter.
About this place
The largest lake in Akan-Mashu National Park in Hokkaido, with a circumference of 57 km. Its name is said to come from the Ainu word Kuccharo, meaning "the place where the lake becomes a river and flows out." Standing on the shore, you see the green Nakajima island floating beyond the wide blue water.
