A cemetery where lavender covers the slope and a great Buddha shows only its head above it. Designed by Tadao Ando.
About this place
The Head Buddha at Makomanai Takino Cemetery in Minami Ward, Sapporo. Designed by the architect Tadao Ando, it appeared in summer 2016. About 60 percent of the grounds is green space, with a park and walking paths, and tourists can visit easily. The Rotunda Cafe & Store sells light meals, coffee, books signed by Ando and original Head Buddha goods.

Note: At “Rotunda Cafe & Store” you can have light meals and coffee. It also sells items available only here, such as books signed by Tadao Ando and original Great Buddha Head goods. Note: The “Water Garden” is not filled with water during the winter snow season (November 4-late April).
