The first Catholic men's monastery in Japan, in Hokuto, Hokkaido, founded in 1896. An avenue of about 200 m leading to the monastery is lined with cedars and poplars. A direct-sales shop for dairy products sells soft serve ice cream, Trappist butter and cookies; open 9:00-17:00.

■ Shop: The directly operated dairy shop sells special soft-serve ice cream, Trappist butter and cookies. ■ Useful tip: If you walk about 20 minutes from the front to the Lourdes Grotto behind the monastery, on a clear day you can see Mt. Hakodate and, across the Tsugaru Strait, as far as the Tsugaru Peninsula.
