Overview
A silver mine in Asago, said to date from 807, whose tunnels can be walked.
About this place
The Ikuno Silver Mine was a mine formerly located in Ikuno-cho, Asago District, Hyogo Prefecture (now Asago). It was the model mine that the new Meiji government first made state-run (directly managed) in order to establish the modernization of Japan's mining industry (mines and smelters), and it is considered one of Japan's leading silver mines. On March 22, 1973 (Showa 48), it closed because of the deterioration of ore quality due to depleted resources, rising mining costs, and other reasons. In 1974 (Showa 49), the Historic Site Ikuno Silver Mine, a tourist facility where visitors can tour the tunnels and more, opened.
