The signature landscape of the Noto Satoyama Satoumi World Agricultural Heritage site: 1,004 paddies on a slope running to the sea. A national scenic site.
About this place
Terraced rice fields in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture. A landscape representative of the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems Noto's Satoyama and Satoumi, it was selected in February Reiwa 4 as a Tsunagu Tanada Isan (terraced field heritage) and is also designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty. There are 1,004 paddies in all, spreading in steps down the steep slope to the sea; they are so small that even tillers cannot enter, so cultivation is done by hand. From mid-October to mid-March the illumination event Aze no Kirameki is held.
