An island off Mitoyo with about 20 inhabitants, its great camphor tree the emblem of the place.
About this place
Shishijima Island in Takuma, Mitoyo, Kagawa Prefecture. The population is about 20, and the island's symbol is a great camphor tree, a prefectural Natural Monument said to be over 1,200 years old. It was once a flower island with flower fields spreading across the whole island, and islanders are working to revive it. It was a filming location for the movies Otoko wa Tsurai yo: Torajiro no Enda and Kikansha Sensei, and highlights are the great camphor tree, the Uba lily (around July to August), Yokoo no Tsuji and the Kusu no Kura Observatory.
