Overview
A peninsula reaching into the Inland Sea from Mitoyo, with the legend of Urashima Taro attached to many spots.
About this place
The Shonai Peninsula is a peninsula in northwestern Mitoyo, Kagawa Prefecture. To the north of the peninsula lies Bisan Seto, and to the west Hiuchi-nada. It is also called the Misaki Peninsula. The area midway along the peninsula connecting Funakoshi and Ohama was once sea, and the part beyond was called Urashima. A tombolo developed and it became a peninsula. The place name Funakoshi is said to be a remnant of boats passing through when it was a canal-like channel while still an island. For details, see the Urashima legend of Takuma-cho, Mitoyo, Kagawa Prefecture, under Urashima Taro.
