Overview
One of Japan's three great views, with Amanohashidate and Miyajima. Over 260 islands lie in and beyond the bay. Poets have written of it since the Heian period, and Basho came here.
About this place
One of the Three Views of Japan, in Matsushima, Miyagi, alongside Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture and Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture. A scenic area where the view of more than 260 islands floating in and around Matsushima Bay spreads out, it is also known as a moon-viewing spot. In 2013 it became the first in Japan to join the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club. Historic buildings remain, such as Kanrantei, used by the Date family, and Zuiganji Temple, built under Masamune Date.
