About this place
Naruko Gorge is a gorge in Naruko Onsen, Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture. It lies within Kurikoma Quasi-National Park and is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty of Miyagi Prefecture. Because of the pronunciation traits of the Sendai dialect, it is sometimes called Narugo-kyo. It lies on the boundary between the Nakayamadaira Basin and the Naruko Basin at the southern foot of Mount Hanabuchi, and was formed by the incised meanders of the Otani River. Cliffs 80 to 100 m deep continue for 4 km, forming a typical V-shaped valley as narrow as 10 m in width in places and a U-shaped valley as wide as 100 m in others.
