About this place
Godaido is a Buddhist hall in Matsushima, a scenic spot in Matsushima, Miyagi District, Miyagi Prefecture. It is a detached hall of Zuiganji, a Myoshinji-school Rinzai temple in the same town. It is an important building in the scenery of Matsushima, one of the Three Views of Japan, and stands on a small island near the Honshu coast. According to tradition, it began in the 2nd year of Daido (807), when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro built a Bishamon hall during his campaign to Oshu.
