Devised in 1948 by Keishiro Sano, who ran a yakitori shop in Sendai. Specialist restaurants now number over a hundred.
About this place
Sendai's famous grilled beef tongue (gyutan). It began in 1948 (Showa 23), after the war, when Keishiro Sano, who ran a yakitori restaurant in Sendai, came across beef tongue as an ingredient in Western food and devised grilled beef tongue. There are said to be more than 100 specialty shops, and the standard is the gyutan teishoku, with thick-cut grilled beef tongue, barley rice and oxtail soup.
