About this place
Rinnoji is a Soto-sect temple in Aoba Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kongohozan. It was founded in 1441 (Kakitsu 1) by Date Mochimune, 11th head of the Date clan, in Yanagawa, Date District (Date, Fukushima Prefecture), and then moved with the Date clan to Nishiyama, Yonezawa, Aizu and Iwadeyama, and in the Edo period, after Date Masamune established Sendai, moved to its present site in 1602 (Keicho 7). Besides the regular zazen meetings held on Saturday evenings every week, morning and evening sesshin zazen meetings are held in early December, in which members of the public can also take part.
