Overview
The collective name for the falls, large and small, on the upper Hirose River. The sound was likened to the cry of a phoenix.
About this place
Homei Shijuhattaki (the Homei 48 Falls) is a waterfall in Aoba Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. It is in the upper reaches of the Hirose River, along National Route 48. It has a drop of 25 meters and a width of 10 meters. Between Sakunami and Niikawa in Aoba Ward, in a mountain stream section with mountains pressing in from both sides, large and small falls follow one after another and echo their sound around. The number does not reach forty-eight. The name Forty-eight Falls has been used since the Edo period, and it is also said that all the falls in the upper reaches, including those on tributaries, add up to forty-eight, but even then it was not settled which fall was which number.
