About this place
The Sendai Aoba Festival is a festival held in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, over two days every year, on the third Sunday of May and the day before. It began in 1985 (Showa 60), the 350th anniversary of the death of Masamune Date, as a revival of a festival that existed in the past. In the Edo period there was the Sendai Toshogu 'Toshogu Gosairei' (Sendai Toshogu in Aoba Ward, Sendai), the largest festival of the Sendai Domain, called the 'Sendai-sai' (Sendai Festival). It was a festival in which dozens of floats (dashi) went ahead as forerunners of the portable shrines and thousands of people took part in the procession.
