About this place
The Shiogama Port Festival is a festival held in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture. It is held every year on the third Monday of July (Marine Day). It began in 1948 (Showa 23) in prayer for the economic development of Shiogama, which prospers as a port town, and for the recovery of spirits of citizens exhausted after the war. Portable shrines are brought out from Shiogama Shrine and Shiwahiko Shrine within its grounds and paraded through the city, then board the ceremonial boats (Ryuho-maru, Hoo-maru) waiting at Shiogama Port and make a progress over the sea.
