Overview
Called the pineapple of the sea. Not a shellfish but a sea squirt, it grows attached to rock. Miyagi produces more than anywhere in Japan.
About this place
Sea squirt (hoya), a marine specialty of Miyagi. Called the "pineapple of the sea" for its shape, Miyagi boasts the highest production in Japan (2020 harvest). At specialty sea squirt restaurants in Sendai you can enjoy it year round, and besides sashimi there are dishes such as pies, fried hoya and potatoes.
