About this place
Saitobaru Kofun Group is a group of burial mounds in Miyake, Doshimaru and Umatsu, Saito, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is designated a National Special Historic Site. It is one of the largest groups of burial mounds in Japan, distributed on a plateau of diluvial deposits at an elevation of about 70 meters. With Mound No. 81 as the oldest at present, they are estimated to have been built from the early 4th century to the first half of the 7th century. Currently 319 high mounds survive, consisting of 31 keyhole-shaped mounds, 2 square mounds and 286 round mounds, and in addition 10 horizontal-hole tombs and 12 underground-style horizontal-hole tombs unique to southern Kyushu have been confirmed.
