Overview
Washboard rock around Aoshima, layers of sandstone and mudstone worn by the waves.
About this place
A group of strange rocks spreading toward the sea, surrounding Aoshima in Miyazaki. Called the Devil's Washboard for its resemblance to a giant washboard, it is designated a national Natural Monument. Sedimentary rock formed under the sea was uplifted and washed by waves, so that only the hard sandstone layers look stacked like boards. It can be seen along about 8 km of coastline from Aoshima south to Kinchakujima.

[Frequently asked questions] Q. Can I walk on the rocks? A. Yes, you can. Especially at low tide, flat wavy rocks are exposed over up to 100 m, and "tide pool play," walking on the rocks to observe creatures such as crabs and small sea snails, is popular. However, wet places and mossy places are slippery, so please wear shoes that are easy to walk in. Q. Is there a recommended time for taking photos? A. Sunrise is especially recommended. Sunlight coming in at an angle casts shadows on the jagged rock surface, letting you photograph a very dynamic and fantastical landscape.
