About this place
Takachiho Gorge is a gorge on the Gokase River in Mitai, Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. A deep valley with well-developed columnar joints located 25 km southeast of Mt. Aso, its cliffs average 80 m in height and reach 100 m at the highest, and this continues for 7 km east to west.
It is a V-shaped gorge formed when lava deposited by the eruptive activity (pyroclastic flows) of Mt. Aso cooled rapidly and was then eroded by the Gokase River.
