About this place
Aratate Shrine is a shrine in Oaza Mitai, Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. Its two main deities are Sarutahiko no Mikoto and Ame no Uzume no Mikoto, and it also enshrines Otoshi no Kami, Sako Tenman, and the ancestors of the Koroki family who live throughout this area. Sarutahiko no Mikoto is described in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki as the deity who guided the way for the descent of the heavenly grandchild, and is known as the god of opening the way; and Ame no Uzume no Mikoto is likewise known from the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki as the goddess who danced joyfully when Amaterasu Omikami hid in the heavenly rock cave.
