Overview
An island that prospered on undersea coal mining. Left empty after the mine closed in 1974, it is a World Heritage site.
About this place
An undersea coal mine island about 40 minutes by boat from Nagasaki Port in Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture. An artificial island built by reclaiming land around a rocky reef, it was nicknamed Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) because its outline resembles the warship Tosa. At its peak in 1960 about 5,300 people lived there, with an elementary and junior high school, a hospital and a movie theater on the island. It contributed to Japan's modernization, closed in 1974, and is registered as a World Cultural Heritage site.
