Overview
Terraced paddies in Hirado, their water coloured by the sun setting into the Genkai Sea.
About this place
Terraced rice fields in the Hirado-Matsuura area of Nagasaki Prefecture. They are said to be among the finest of the 100 Best Terraced Rice Fields of Japan. During the rice planting season from late April to early May each year, about 400 paddies glow in the setting sun, and photographers come from all over the country. In September the Tsuchiya Terraced Rice Fields Fire Festival is held, and candles are lit.
