About this place
A castle site in Minamishimabara. Said to have been built by Arima Takazumi, it is a natural stronghold surrounded on three sides by the Ariake Sea, with a perimeter of 4 km, consisting of the main enclosure, second enclosure, third enclosure and Amakusa enclosure. It was the main battlefield of the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion, in which rebels held out in 1637. A national historic site, it is a World Cultural Heritage site included in the Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region.
