Overview
An ancient mountain fortress in Tsushima, built for defence after the defeat at Baekgang; a special national historic site.
About this place
An ancient mountain castle on Mt. Shiroyama, projecting from the south shore of Aso Bay in Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture. Built in 667, it is said that sakimori (border guards) summoned from eastern Japan kept watch over the Korean Peninsula from the summit. On the eve of the Russo-Japanese War it was developed again as a fortress and huge gun batteries were installed. Ancient mountain castle and modern fortress coexist, and it is designated a national Special Historic Site.
