About this place
Banshoin is a Tendai sect temple in Izuhara-cho, Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture. In 1615 (Genna 1), Yoshinari So, the second lord of the Tsushima Fuchu Domain, built it west of Kanaishi Yakata (Kanaishi Castle), the residence of the So clan, to hold memorial services for the first lord, Yoshitoshi So. At its founding it was a Rinzai sect temple called Shoon-ji, but in 1622 (Genna 8) it was renamed Banshoin after Yoshitoshi So's Buddhist name. In 1635 (Kan'ei 12), at the urging of Grand Priest Jisei, it converted from the Rinzai sect to the Tendai sect.
