Overview
Salt-marsh plants growing along the Ariake shore in Saga City, which turn red in autumn.
About this place
A colony of Shichimenso (Suaeda japonica) that can be seen from the embankment of Higashiyoka Coast along the Ariake Sea in Saga. Shichimenso is an annual plant of the amaranth family, 20 to 40 cm tall, a rare salt-marsh plant that grows where it is submerged by seawater at high tide and becomes a tidal flat at low tide. In late autumn it dyes the shore deep red, coloring like autumn leaves on mountains.
