About this place
Saga Shrine is a shrine in Saga, Saga Prefecture. Its former shrine rank was Bekkaku Kanpeisha. It enshrines the 10th lord of Saga Domain, Naomasa Nabeshima, and the 11th lord, Naohiro Nabeshima. Naomasa carried out domain reforms, actively adopted advanced Western technology, and also fostered talents such as Shigenobu Okuma and Shinpei Eto. Naohiro fought as part of the imperial army in the Boshin War and in Meiji 2 offered the return of the domain registers (hanseki hokan). In Meiji 6 (1873), after Naomasa's death, in praise of Naomasa's virtue, a South Hall was built at Matsubara Shrine, which enshrines the ancestors of the Nabeshima family, and Naomasa was enshrined.
