About this place
Tajima Shrine is a shrine on Kabeshima in Yobuko-cho, Karatsu, Saga Prefecture (formerly Yobuko, Matsuura District, Hizen Province). The area corresponds to Matsuro-koku, which appears in the Records of Wei (Gishi Wajinden) as the first land of the mainland of Wakoku. It is a key point on the safest sea-crossing route to the continent, and has received favor from the central government since ancient times. In ancient times it was recorded as 'Tajima ni Imasu Kami no Yashiro.' It is the only Myojin Taisha in Hizen Province, and in some eras was regarded as the Ichinomiya of Hizen Province. Its former shrine rank under the Meiji reforms was Kokuhei Chusha.
