About this place
A facility in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, displaying the hikiyama floats of the Karatsu Kunchi festival all year round. The first hikiyama, Aka-jishi, was dedicated to Karatsu Shrine in the 2nd year of Bunsei (1819), 15 were made, and 14 remain today. The floats themselves are prefectural Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties, and the festival is registered as a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. It has currently moved to the grounds of Karatsu Furusato Kaikan Arupino because of rebuilding work.
