Overview
Terraced paddies in Genkai, facing the Genkai Sea rather than the Ariake, their water shining at sunset.
About this place
Terraced rice fields in the northwest of Genkai, Saga Prefecture, in the lower reaches of the Hamanoura River. The slopes continue in steps from the coast facing the Genkai Sea, and from the time of puddling to rice planting the setting sun dyes them orange. There are 283 plots, with stone-walled ridges, handed down from the Sengoku and Edo periods. In winter there is an event that colors the terraces in four colors: yellow, blue, green and pink.
