Overview
A quarry in Arita where porcelain stone was found in 1616; a national historic site.
About this place
A historic site in Arita, Saga Prefecture, regarded as the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. In the early 17th century the Korean potter Yi Sampei discovered porcelain stone, the raw material of porcelain, and porcelain was born in Japan for the first time. After 400 years of continuous digging, it now presents a strange sight, and during the Autumn Arita Ceramics Fair in November you can enter areas normally closed and enjoy autumn leaves.
