Overview
Torii in Tara. With the tides of the Ariake Sea, their feet sink beneath the water.
About this place
Three underwater torii in the Ariake Sea at Sakaemachi, Tara, Saga Prefecture. About 300 years ago (around 1693), a magistrate stranded on an island was saved by a giant fish (Namino-uo); in gratitude he built Ouo Shrine, named after the fish, and also erected a torii in the sea about 200 meters from shore. The custom of rebuilding every 30 years is still carried on, and it is a popular photo spot.
