A townscape in Ureshino that prospered on Ariake Sea shipping; a preservation district of traditional buildings.
About this place
Shiodatsu is a group of townhouses in Shioda-cho, Ureshino, Saga Prefecture. In 2005 (Heisei 17) it was selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings (Judenken district). It prospered as a post town (Shioda-juku) on the Nagasaki Kaido and a river port (Shiodatsu) on the Shioda River. White plaster-walled townhouses called 'igura-ya' (igura-zukuri) line the street, forming a distinctive landscape. Besides the igura-ya, the survival of Edo-period town plots, land divisions and waterways was a factor in its selection as a Judenken district.
